I’m sure the first thing that came to mind was Tyler Perry’s hit movie Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor starring the irresistible Jurnee Smollett-Bell. What a story he told.
Sunday, May 18, 2014, I went to worship service. I was so excited to hear the Word of God. I just knew He had something just for me. He always does. We prayed, we sang, and prayed some more. Before I knew it, Evangelist Williams was in the pulpit. He made a remark of how beautiful it was to see saints of God truly worshipping, He referred to me as “twin” and loudly said “I see twin rocking from side to side” to one of my fav songs, Jesus is Coming Soon. I just smiled. When I think of His goodness, I can’t help but praise His name. After a little more rambling, he read the text. 1 Corinthians 10:13 – No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it. We’ve heard this verse a thousand times, but this time it was different. God had one more perspective for us to see.
We are all tempted by something at some point in life. It is not just lust. It could be greed of money, drunkenness, jealousy, and the list goes on. But God does not tempt us. WE TEMPT OURSELVES. Read the last sentence again and let that marinate. We try things and when they do not satisfy the temptation, we try other things. If you know your temptation, IDENTIFY it. When you identify it, DON’T MAKE PROVISIONS for it.
God always does His part, WE MUST do ours to withstand temptation. We have the Book, we just have to dwell in it. No temptation can overtake you unless YOU make a provision for it.
